Using Coca Cola for Cleaning

One of the active ingredients in Coca Cola is phosphoric acid. It has a pH of 2.8, (On a scale of 1 -14, with 1 being the most acidic, 7 being neutral, and 14 being very caustic). Pure phosphoric acid can eat through metal, and dissolve concrete, but it sure makes the coke taste good.

Rumors say that Coke distributors have used it over the years to clean the engines of their delivery trucks, and it also works to help scrub road grime from your windshield. We can’t actually advise using Coca Cola as a substitute for regular detergents, however there are some interesting ideas people have put forward over the years:

Toilet Cleaning

Pour a can of coca cola into the toilet bowl. Let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china. It should work equally well for sinks and bath tubs.

CAR BUMPER RUST

Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in cocacola.

CLEAN CORROSION FROM BATTERY TERMINALS

Pour a can of cocacola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. This is according to Heloise.

LOOSEN A RUSTY BOLT

Applying a cloth soaked in Coca Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

REMOVE GREASE FROM CLOTHES

Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The cocacola will help loosen grease stains.

  1. Coke also works good on clogged drains. It will not unclog hair clogs but it works very well in the kitchen with greasy drains. I pour a can in the kitchen drains every two weeks or so to clean the pipes. It will not hurt your pipes, no matter what they are made of. Pour a two lite bottle of coke in a clogged drain and it will eat through the clog in no time

  2. I am going to try using Coke in my bathroom today when I clean it. Hope it works. I am still going to drink it too because Coke is IT and much better tasting than that other cola.

  3. While not claiming drinking Coca Cola is actually good for you, I don’t think you have a lot to worry about at least in this sense. Your own stomach acids—bubbling over with hydrochoric acid— has a Ph of 1 to 2, and is much higher than Coke at 2.8. Theoretically, it should make a great cleaning fluid too with THAT much acidity…..although if you vomit on your bathroom faucets to remove the lime deposits….which, because of the high acidity, SHOULD work pretty well with dissolving calcium-based crud, lol….. please don’t invite me to your house 😉

  4. Take a baby tooth, that the tooth fairly has collected, and leave it in a glass of coca cola over night and it will literally eat the tooth away. Do you want your children to be drinking that much coca cola?

  5. HAve worked in apartment maintenances for over 27 yrs. Many tentents always would ask about what works good on removing the calcium inside the bowl.I tell them to pour one can of coca-cola and let set over night and it works (might have to do it twice)
