This is a general spring backyard Checklist

Yard

O Check fence line for damage and test posts for stability
O Check for mildew and fungus. Is cleaning necessary?
O Check stability of structures (patio's, gazebo's, jungle gym's, stairs)
O Check retaining walls for movement and drainage
O Pick up large branches and twigs
O Sweep walks, driveways, and paths. Hose down if needed.
O Check drive for antifreeze, oil, steering fluid, etc
O Check seal on attic access hatch to prevent heat loss from house into attic

Garden

O Pick up rocks, sticks, grass, and weeds
O Add previous years compost and manure to garden, dig to mix in
O Check closely for evidence of pests (insects, mice, etc)
O Apply pesticides, if necessary. Investigate other means if possible.
O Check all pesticides and fertilizers. If not required check for proper disposal
O Edge garden.

Lawns

O Test soil for pH (Add lime if acidity is high)
O Dethatch lawn to help nutrients and water reach the soil
O Aerate soil using pitch fork or aerator machine to open soil to the roots of the grass
O Cut the grass short. Remove 1/2 to 2/3 of the length of the blades
O Before a rain, fertilize using a fertilizer with a nitrogen level appropriate for your lawn
O Follow safety guidelines for mowing your lawn
O Edge lawn to restore crisp edges
O Contain all clippings, dethatching, trimmings in clear bag for special pick up

Mowers

O Remove caked on grass with a piece of wood or plastic. Do not use metal.
O Change oil
O Replace oil filter, if any
O Clean air filter, allow to dry thoroughly
O Replace spark plug
O Sharpen or replace blade
O When engine is cold, refuel OUTSIDE, using fresh gasoline. Do not use old gas.

Pools, Fountains, and Others

O Clean out fish pond, clean pump, clean filter, replace plants, water, and fish
O Clean fountain and pumps
O Clean bird baths with vinegar or chlorine. Clean weekly throughout summer.
O Clean out bird houses.
O Clean out bird feeders. Sanitize.
